Héctor Santiago, OD, PhD, FAAO

I was born in Ponce, Puerto Rico. I have a B.S. in Physics and Mathematics from the University of Puerto Rico at Mayaguez.  I finished my MS and Ph.D. at the University of Texas Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences at Houston (Texas) and my O.D. (Doctor of Optometry) degree from the New England College of Optometry in Boston (Massachusetts). I was a former Dean at Inter American University of Puerto Rico School of Optometry (IAUPR). I am a Professor at the IAUPR School of Optometry where I teach the Cultural Competence, Visual Perception, and Vision Research courses. My research interests are in the area of pediatric optometry, epidemiology of refractive error, and optometric education. I am involved in the Latin American Association of Optometry and Optics (ALDOO) in the Public Health and Education Committees. I am also a member of VOSH (Volunteer in Optometry for the Service to Humanity) and the International Association of Lion Clubs. I enjoy serving disadvantaged communities in need of primary eye care and to promote the growth of the Latin American optometric educational institutions.

Nací en Ponce, Puerto Rico. Tengo una Licenciatura en  Física y Matemáticas de la Universidad de Puerto Rico en Mayagüez. Terminé mi Maestría y Ph.D. (Doctorado en Ciencias) de la Escuela de Graduada de Ciencias Biomédicas de la Universidad de Texas en Houston (Texas) y mi O.D. (Doctorado en Optometría) en el New England College of Optometry en Boston (Massachusetts). Fui decano de la Escuela de Optometría de la Universidad Interamericana de Puerto Rico (IAUPR). Soy profesor en la Escuela de Optometría de la IAUPR, donde imparto los cursos de Competencia Cultural, Percepción Visual e Investigación de la Visión. Mis intereses de investigación se encuentran en el área de la optometría pediátrica, la epidemiología del error refractivo y la educación en optometría. Estoy involucrado en la Asociación Latinoamericana de Optometría y Óptica (ALDOO) en los Comités de Salud Pública y Educación. También soy miembro de VOSH (Voluntarios en Optometría para el Servicio a la Humanidad) y de la Asociación Internacional de Clubes de Leones. Disfruto sirviendo a comunidades desfavorecidas que necesitan atención ocular primaria y promover el crecimiento de las instituciones educativas de optometría en América Latina.
